Good cast but an ordinary western
Republic's entry is a middling programmer about a personal grudge between a Union sympathizer and a Confederate lieutenant during the American Civil War and Juarez' struggle against Maximillian and the French in Mexico. Rod Cameron and Forrest Tucker are the main adversaries in this western that wastes a very good cast. The film's plot, an obscure historical footnote, is hard to follow and the cattle drives lifted from other westerns give the picture a choppy, unbalanced look. Arleen Whelan and Katy Jurado are very good, especially Whelan as a scheming, flighty and amoral woman. Jurado is smitten with Cameron but the smoldering embers between them somehow seem warmed over because he doesn't appear to be her type. The action is okay but spotty, with the principals mainly battling thirst, Indians and each other. Harry Carey Jr, Bob Steele and Rudy Acosta are solid and do what they can with the material at hand.

It's a dreary Christmas 1944 for the American POWs in Stalag 17. For the men in Barracks 4, all sergeants, have to deal with a grave problem - there seems to be a security leak. The Germans always seem to be forewarned about escapes and in the most recent attempt the two men, Manfredi and Johnson, walked straight into a trap and were killed. For some in Barracks 4, especially the loud-mouthed Duke, the leaker is obvious: J.J. Sefton, a wheeler-dealer who doesn't hesitate to trade with the guards and who has acquired goods and privileges that no other prisoner seems to have. Sefton denies giving the Germans any information and makes it quite clear that he has no intention of ever trying to escape. He plans to ride out the war in what little comfort he can arrange, but it doesn't extend to spying for the Germans. As tensions mount and a mob mentality takes root, it becomes obvious that Sefton will have to find the real snitch if he is to have any peace and avoid the beatings Duke and ...

the perennial 'feel-good' American POW movie
Billy Wilder's Stalag 17 relies on folds of comedy and a cynical attitude to elevate a story that seems out of a crime novel. Here we have a cast of characters, and the undercurrent is 'who's the rat?' in a bunker as the secrets shuffled around (i.e. that there's a tunnel for escape) and the Germans know right away. There's fun in that, and in being able to 2nd guess who the informant really is- at one point I thought the old adage "it's the quiet ones you got to watch" would come forward- but Wilder is brilliant at transforming this as some solid suspense and dramatic tension while ALSO making a really snappy (sometimes) dark comedy. It's a movie about personality, despite the plot being somewhat important, and with the actors themselves delivering a lot for the characters' sakes.
William Holden is the first given attribute as the star, playing the sort who, for a conventional movie-goer audience, seems easy to peg: too full of himself, sneaky, has the motive to be the informant. But as the layers come into focus, he's more than meets the eye, and Holden (against his better instincts, as he didn't want the role originally) fills it in with his subtle swagger and great sarcastic touch carried over from Sunset Blvd. Then there's Otto Premminger, a big surprise as he is mostly known as a director, as the Commandant, taking up and stealing every scene he's in (only Erich von Stroheim in Grand Illusion beats him out as tour-de-force Commandants). Then there's supporting work from the desperate 'clowns' (Robert Strauss's Betty Grable obsessed Animal and Harvey Lembeck's Shapiro), and the cool Don Talyer in a turn as Dunbar. They're all at their best.
While it almost appears to be more entertaining than it perhaps should- considering, as Cookie's opening narration says, movies about the army have been glamorized and this story is different- it's kind of like the Hollywood 50s answer to something like A Man Escaped. Bresson's film is cold and detached and immediate in dramatic impact, while Stalag 17 wants to be a big hit. There's a lot of humor, some unexpected, some that are meant to be big laughs (i.e. Animal and Shapiro's scheme to get into the Russian prison), and they all connect. It's simply a really entertaining movie that has transcended its period, thanks to Wilder's faith in (and more than likely proponent of) an ironic, witty sensibility to otherwise dark and gloomy cinematic terrain.

Sweet Memories
A lovely, modest turn-of-the-century musical featuring Dan Dailey as one of those medicine show con men that seemed to be everywhere in the cinematic wild west, with Scatman Crothers as his pal, Chet Allen as the little boy he "adopts". Douglas Sirk directs this films with a real feel for the period, and seems literally to be taking his cues on how to direct this film from Dan Dailey's acting style. Dailey was a conundrum. He never made the top cut of musical stars, yet he could sing and dance with the best of them, and was a better actor than most. There was a cynicism to everything he did that made him perfect for con man and shifty character roles, yet he never found the right one that would enable him to break through, especially in his post-musical career. Here he is in very much in his element, as he plays the character of Doc Tilbee as both a scamp and a decent guy. That the little boy idolizes him and regards him as a larger than life hero, taking Doc's tall tales for the real thing, gives a poignancy to the story. Since Doc is himself somewhat of a child, he understands the boy instinctively, and this helps him grow up a little, too.
There are some nice songs along the way, and real heartbreak as well, and both complement the story rather than detract from it, and so the movie is all of a piece. This is a perfect film for a lazy summer afternoon or evening. It brings back sweet memories of childhood, and when it's over it's hard to believe that the story maybe didn't happen to you, that it's part of your life, and that you just happened to have forgotten about it. There aren't too many movies you can this this about. The Wizard Of Oz comes to mind. Meet Me At the Fair is in its way almost as memorable.

A woman's constant lying leads to first humorous, then tragic consequences.
Though not as dazzling as Ophuls' greatest works, 'La Ronde' & 'Le Plaisir', this more conventional romantic melodrama still has his magic fingerprints all over it & is a joy to behold. The acting of all three leads is simply immaculate (witness the scene in the railway carriage as a couple part - the hesitancy, expectancy, the kiss at last upon just the hand... just sublime).
Seldom, if ever, have I seen the affairs of the human heart portrayed so compassionately, & with so little judgement or blame. I am so glad to have finally discovered the films of Max Ophuls.

Low budget British Mystery
This film is one of my favourite low budget British mysteries from the 1950's. Houston stars as a man framed for a crime. He serves his time in prison and upon release goes back to the small rural town he grew up in. There, he is considered a crook and treated like an outcast. When a murder occurs in the town, everyone is quick to point their finger at him. Even the police believe he is guilty and a man hunt is initiated.
A small bit of fortune goes his way and he finds evidence that incriminates the real killer. Now it's a race against time as he tries to confront the real killer before he is captured by the police. This is a minor, low budget British mystery. But the performances are well above par, especially Mr. Houston, and I found this an enjoyable 70 minutes. In the Desert no-one can hear you scream!
I agree with a few other reviewers here - why the hell does this never show up on TV, cable or even old video warehouses? I have seen it but once, in London the week of its initial release almost 50 years ago. I was 7. Thing is, I remember it perfectly, way better than SHOWTIME and I only saw THAT yesterday!
Top desert caper that was all audiences wanted to see in the 50's. No-one swashbuckled better than Tyrone Power during this period and KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES was a handsome production, especially on the gigantic CINEMASCOPE screen. Directed by action-specialist Henry King, who worked with Power in almost a dozen movies, the story was that of half-caste British soldier Alan King (Power) who had to battle not only Army etiquette but a rampaging uprising around the Khyber Pass! The well remembered image from this flick was the spearing of the helpless British soldiers at the stake. Power of course, gaining a last minute reprieve so he could complete the movie, take down the villains and win the girl.
Good supporting cast, Michael Rennie in particular cutting an impressive figure as Brigadier Maitland whose stiff upper lip was stiffer than most!

Subdued, overwrought, aspirational, with cool dribbling
A charming time-capsule starring another charismatic but forgotten actor, Dane Clark (not the execrable Dane Cook), alongside a young Sidney Poitier, "Go Man Go!" features a bebop score by Slim Galliard, who was a favorite of Jack Kerouac. I wonder what the connection with "On the Road" is -- I remember the phrase "Go Man Go" as an exhortation Sal Paradise shouted out to improvising jazz musicians.
Slim Galliard makes an appearance, playing a piano with his fingers upside down for a small gathering of Globetrotters. I love Kerouac's description of a Galliard concert: '... we went to see Slim Gaillard in a little Frisco nightclub. Slim Gaillard is a tall, thin Negro with big sad eyes who's always saying 'Right-orooni' and 'How 'bout a little bourbon-arooni.' In Frisco great eager crowds of young semi-intellectuals sat at his feet and listened to him on the piano, guitar and bongo drums." "...Then he slowly gets up and takes the mike and says, very slowly, 'Great-orooni ... fine-ovauti ... hello-orooni ... bourbon-orooni ... all-orooni ... how are the boys in the front row making out with their girls-orooni ... orooni ... vauti ... oroonirooni ..." He keeps this up for fifteen minutes, his voice getting softer and softer till you can't hear. His great sad eyes scan the audience." What kills me is "ovauti", it makes sense next to "o-rooni" but it's so weird, where is it coming from? It's perfect though.
That's the 1950's part of this movie, the 1940's part consists of stereotypical interactions between Clark as Abe Saperstein, Bill Stern (as himself) a hard-bitten but honest sportswriter, and the evil Potter-like sports magnate Mr. Willoughby. The Bowery-Boys-style slang they use -- "Hey ya mug! Ya gonna be a chump all your life? Of course you're invited!" -- is the direct precursor of today's crushingly unimaginative board-room Ebonics appropriation: "Quarterly earnings doubled? Girl, go on with your bad self!". It was probably just as hard to listen to back then.
The 1960's part of the movie is best shown in the final scene, Abe Saperstein, arm-in-arm with the Globetrotters, walking triumphantly towards the camera, in a hopeful message of racial healing. Shades of Blackboard Jungle. I can't recall another movie from the 1950's that was this hopeful and unabashed about race. Today's derivative ironic culture cannibalizes sentiment like this.
"Go Man Go" also has something to say about acting. In an early scene real-life Globetrotter "Sweetwater Clifton" speaks some lines about how he likes soda pop (the origin of his nickname). He delivers them woodenly, although with charm. This is the low end of the acting scale.
Raising the bar, Dane Clark as Abe Saperstein, shows real conviction, but he's always hitting something when he acts. "I'm going to get us into big arenas if it's the last thing I do!' (SMACK). It's as if the director fired him up before every scene ("Now this time really mean it!") without thinking what the cumulative effect would be. Clark's "average Joe" always seems to be in a harangue.
The best actor in the movie is Sidney Poitier, in a relatively minor role, who pops up from time-to-time to speak a few impassioned lines. He does so with quiet conviction, and having seen the other actors telegraph and flail, one gets a sense of the star quality of Sidney Poitier.
A couple of minor points about this movie: it is exemplary in showing what I like to call "old-time small basketball court syndrome", action shot in a remarkably cramped gym. Another film that features this is "Angels with Dirty Faces" where the players are dodging trapezes and other non-basketball equipment as they play on a tiny court.
"Go Man Go" made me think of why, although everyone knows Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, no one knows who did it in the NBA. It turns out that Charles Cooper was the first drafted, Nat Clifton was the first signed, and Earl Lloyd the first to play in a game, all in 1950. Even though it's complicated, I would think this deserves a little more recognition. Is it because basketball is not "America's Game"?

Not the good kind of bad.
I just saw this at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival 31. I have a few observations to offer.
This movie certainly falls within the realm of "there go eighty minutes of my life that I'll never get back again". In fact I have two quite earnest theories about this movie that may account for at least a part of its overall horribility.
It is quite obvious that the film was only minimally scripted. There were all the hallmarks of improvised dialog, but not in an artsy experimental cinema kind of way. More like "OK, We've got this sound stage for an hour, but no dialog written. Action!" My other suspicion is that the studio contracted for a film of a specific length, and the director was actively trying to pad it out. This is quite obvious. Another commenter mentioned product placements for Longines watches, but not every time we were subjected to real-time half-minute closeups of clocks were we looking at a Longines.
Finally, If I ever hear Borodin's "Stranger in Paradise" again, I'll strangle myself! It was played at least twelve times, I'd swear.
I've officially named the villain "Mr. Tiki-Head" for reasons that will be obvious if you have the misfortune to view this dreadful excuse for a movie.

I watched a clear full screen print of this movie, running 108 minutes. The title frames read "Un leben fur Deutschland" ADMIRAL CANARIS.
One seldom sees such a well-done biographically-based movie. The picture focuses on the head of Germany's intelligence (Abwehr) and spying operations between 1935 and the time of his arrest by Hitler in 1944. His imprisonment and execution are not mentioned or shown.
This is a highly intriguing story, done in a very engaging and mature way. It manages very smoothly to integrate personal details and subplots with documentary footage and suspenseful spy sequences. The acting is very realistic, the events plausible, although certainly the story has been dramatized. It might possibly be criticized for being somewhat episodic, but I do not see that as a fault because each of the selected incidents and sequences is handled adeptly.
The script is really first rate. We know the characters and understand them. The details are engaging, both of personal beliefs, personal feelings and tragedies, personal pressures, the spying operations, and the internal conflicts between Canaris and Heydrich. The scenes that are selected for our viewing are invariably interesting. The script wisely does not stay strictly on Canaris. It opens out to the relationship between one of his younger assistants (Adrian Hoven) and a young woman (Barbara Rutting) induced by Heydrich to spy on Canaris. It also works in spy sequences in France and London.
Canaris favored Hitler in 1937, as a counter to the Soviet Union, but he changed his mind in 1938 and then covertly worked against the Nazi excesses and mad schemes.
Canaris, a loyal German, is shown as seeking for Germany to avoid wars that he knew it could not win. He brings to light intelligence showing German's disadvantages, but it is typically ignored by the Nazi leadership. In 1938, Canaris plots against Hitler, planning a coup d'etat. This fizzles out due to Munich. He obviously walks a tightrope in his efforts to bring some sanity to the Hitler regime, maintaining cordial relations on the surface with Reinhold Heydrich. The latter is shown as constantly seeking to bring down Canaris so that he can take over the intelligence operations led by Canaris. The conflict between the traditional values of Canaris and those of Heydrich is brought out. Hitler is seen and heard briefly and only in documentary footage.
O.E. Hasse does a great job in the role of Canaris. He's assisted ably by Wolfgang Preiss as his right-hand man. Martin Held does an exceptional job as Heydrich. The rest of the cast equally carry their roles smoothly and engagingly.
The photography is in noir style in many scenes. This adds.
Certainly anyone with an interest in this historical era, fans of spy movies, fans of intrigue, and those with an interest in films that involve Nazis will not want to pass up seeing this film if they have the opportunity.

Kieran Moore plays a naval officer who has been released from captivity in Korea having suffered brainwashing.It is felt that he would benefit from being in charge of youths in an Outward Bound training camp on the Welsh coast.Much of the film in so far as it relates to Moore and his charges is predictable.It is rather difficult to take some of it too seriously when you realise that Fowler was 29 and Newley 24 when the film was made.Strange how the British cinema often asked actors in their twenties to try and play 10 years their junior.However that aside it is a reasonable film with some good exterior shots in a rather strange looking Eastman Colour.This was one of the last efforts of the ill fated Group 3 production company.

Minor western with a decent cast.
Probably the most distinguishing feature about this "B" western is the choice of names for the characters. One of the leading men is named Stacey, the leading lady is named Brett and their Native American adversary is named Chief Mike! Montgomery plays a zero-tolerence, by-the-book Major who comes to an Oregon fort with orders to solve the Indian problem. There have been skirmishes back and forth across the title river and he's been given instructions to end the conflict, one way or another, to pave the way for Oregon statehood. (It does complicate matters that his orders from headquarters change on a dime!) Denning is the head of a civilian militia who is also heavily involved in the fighting. Both men have their eye on a Sergeant's daughter (Hyer) who has a mind of her own. Finally, some misunderstanding and manipulation leads to a final stand off between the Cavalry and the Indians. There isn't a lot that's particularly special about this film, one of dozens of this kind, but it does entertain and is brief enough not to drag much. Montgomery is handsome, stalwart and charming, even through his icy exterior. Hyer is spirited and flirtatious. Crawford looks as if he's going to have a decent role (and it's great to see him looking young and handsome), but it only goes so far before he's lost in the shuffle. The Indians, aside from Granger as the Chief, don't come off as particularly authentic or menacing. At least the dialogue has a few decent lines. Other films have covered this territory better, but it's not a bad time killer. Directed by infamous showman William Castle just prior to his horror spree, it's a wonder audiences didn't get a clamp that looks like an arrow went through their head with each paid admission!

Not scary... funny!
This creepy Mansion comedies are a dime a dozen. Everybody has one in their credits. Tin Tan, Pompín Iglesias, etc. Here the star is Clavillazo. The plot changes though, because the group of people who were called to get the inheritance, will not have to spend 3 days and 3 nights in the creepy Mansion before they die or go crazy; they can go home and live their lives as they usually do and only visit the Mansion by night. They have to endure 3 nights here, and if they survive, the money is theirs to keep. Most of that money will go to one niece of the deceased, Mercedes Benz (Alma Rosa Aguirre) while the rest will go to whoever finds it, because it's hidden. So, every night, the doctor, the lawyer, the girlfriend, the maid, the chauffeur, they all will try to outsmart the rest in a crazy race until the executioner shows up and start leaving less and less people to enjoy wealth. Is then when Mercedez Benz's boyfriend hires a private detective (Clavillazo) to find the hidden money fast and stop the killings. A sequel to Grosse Freiheit N. R. 7
St Pauli, in Homberg is the New Orleans of Germany and Great freedom number 7 street is it's bourbon street. It's a party town but the characters in the film has changed. Hans Alber is a different Hans. He also has another brother ,who now owns the the hippodrome, played by Heinz Ruhmann, co run by his girl friend , played by Fita Benkhoff.this different version of the Hans character has come back from the sea to settle in St Pauli. His brother is having problems no one want s to go to his place any more the horse riding is boring to tourist.Hans coming back helps him out with his barking and his accordion. the song that he sang in Grosse Freiheit n.r. 7 is used as a title of the film and he sings it again. He seems to draw people to Heinzs club. It gets so good that Heinz seeks a loan from the property owner of St Paulis night clubs,played by Gustav Knuth, but his associates ,one of them played by Fritz Wagner are a bunch of crooks and he doesn't know this. Heinz has a problem with Hans spending a lot of time with his daughter Hans niece, who's in love with the son of the property owner, thinking he's stealing affection away from him but he always too busy to pay any attention to his daughter. It seems that years earlier Hans was in love with Heinz late wife before they got married but being that he was a sea lover she chose Heinz.The crooks try to set up trouble with Hans and his brother and the bar. They try to use one of the dancers of the bar , I think they control, but she changes her heart and becomes fond of Hans. Well Hans and Heinz gets in to an argument about him stealing affection from his daughter and moves out of his place. The crooks dupe Heinz into helping them get some valuable stuff from an old world war 2 submarine,under the ocean, so they can sell it for money but making him think that they will turn it in to the government since it would be own by the state.Hans comes to the rescue and all well that ends well but Hans misses the sea so he goes back and another sequel 3, The Nights in ST.Pauli. You have the Wiemar Distric in Berlin ,Zurick,Munich but St Pauli is still the New Orleans of Germany and a tourist trap still today just check the website. available at www.warfilms.com

Aldrich adds an extra dimension.
Apart from Burt Lancaster's macho warrior performance, this movie is also saved by Robert Aldrich's direction. It's not brilliant in any sense, but pure enough to tell a story with some unique moments that give it his trade mark. Also the subject matter of an Indian being a hero was not common in the 1950s. It was a brave attempt to create empathy for the Indian Warrior, but it was not difficult because Burt Lancaster played it perfectly in a heroic campy style. I know, white folks playing Indigenous roles can sometimes put you off, but because of the time period it was made in, I decided to let it go and enjoy this Western romp because Lancaster is my all time favorite actors, and I was always interested in Aldrich as an accomplish director who had his own style that suited this film to perfection.
