I was looking for this movie, which I saw as a little boy during the Cultural Revolution in China.
I cannot write a better review than what has been written here. I sincerely, wholeheartedly echo the reviewer's assessment. This is truly an epic film of all times, notwithstanding the intention ofr political propaganda behind the making of this film. Heck, all have tried to make such nationalistic films. The Soviets have done a better job than most others.
We were shown this film as part of Chinese government propaganda of revealing Soviet imperial designs. I was impressed, nevertheless, by the epic battle scenes and how Admiral Ushakov faded away (reminding an American perhaps General MacArthur).
How can we get to see more non-American/non-English epics?

Leisen's best years were behind him when he made "young man" .First of all,Glenn Ford is no longer a young man (36) in 1952 and he is not really good at comedy.Ruth Roman isn't either but she manages quite well in the scene of the dinner with chic people.Except for this scene and the appearance of the horrible child showing off ,there are not many funny moments in "young man...",even in the would be original sequences in which Max plays both the convict and the lawyer .The screenplay is poor compared to those of the forties ("Remember the night" " Arise my love" ) and the cast (which includes also Nina Foch and French Denise Darcel who never made a movie in her native country ) cannot hold a candle to Leisen's former actors such as Claudette Colbert,Ray Milland ,Don Ameche ,etc

Enjoyable little actioner
"Yankee Buccaneer" is a variation on the demented Arabian Nights fetish that Universal Pictures seemed to have in the late '40s and early '50s, the difference being that this one doesn't take place in the days of Ali Baba. It's the 1840s, and a U.S. Navy ship is ordered to disguise itself as a merchant vessel and sail to the waters off North Africa to put a stop to pirates preying on American ships. The action scenes are handled well, Jeff Chandler fits the part of the dashing American naval officer, the women are fetching, the cast is full of familiar faces (including Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto in the "Lone Ranger" series), the story doesn't venture past the realm of possibility and it moves along at a good clip. All in all, a neat little B picture--not the best of the lot, but far from the worst.

Following a news report that a fabulous jewel collection, called "Unclaimed Cargo", will be on display at the Waldorf Jewelry Company, a city alderman and secret underworld gang leader, Nick Petzik (Peter Brocco), plans a gigantic jewel robbery. To ensure the success of his scheme, Petzik chooses three of his most capable men for the job; "Dutch" Bender (John Doucette), "Slats" Hylan (Richard Irving), and Kirsten, a crooked official of the jewel company. Petzik intends to sell the jewels back to Waldorf's insurance company; and to force the insurance company to play ball with him, Petzik enlists the aid of Gino Morello (Richard Benedict), a young and reckless Italian boy, whose brother Phil(Rick Vallin)is the lawyer for the insurance company. Petzik is sure that once the 3-billed Phil learns that his 4th-Billed brother is one of the thieves, he will do business with the gang without asking any questions.
But...Anna Reichardt (Penny Edwards), a charming Austrian girl who---with her aunt Maria---runs a pastry shop on the ground floor of the Morello apartment building...is a witness to the robbery and spots Gino as one of the robbers.
Then it gets complicated...and messy. Barbara Billingsley is a socialite engaged to Phil, who is the nominal action hero in this one, because Ross Elliott, who should have been, plays the Priest brother of Phil and Gino, and only provides lectures. This means of course, Penny Edwards has to end up in somebody's arms, and Rick Vallin is the only qualified Morello brother. And he has to suddenly break his engagement to the surprised Barbara Billingsley right before THE END, in order for Penny Edwards to have somebody to kiss before THE END.

The dancingest, funniest musical of Hollywood's golden age.
Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen have produced the best musical written directly for the screen. They have used the period in film history during the transition to sound movies and embroidered it with the wonderful songbook of Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown. The icing on the cake, of course is the choreography of Kelly and Donen. From the first moment, the movie takes flight as Kelly relates the tale of his rise as a silent film star with his sidekick, the incomparable Donald O'Connor. Watch the flying feet of O'Connor and Kelly in the "Fit as a Fiddle" number. It doesn't get much better than this. Everyone is familiar with the classic "Singin' in the Rain" sequence. Donald O'Connor's hysterical "Make 'em Laugh" number is probably the funniest musical three minutes on film. Even the Broadway Ballet is a kaleidoscope of color and movement, with a minimum of the highbrow balletic choreography found in the later "An American in Paris."
What makes "Singin'" such an entertaining classic is its superb integration of comedy and music. Jean Hagen gives the performance of her life as the vocally challenged silent film star, Lena Lamont. Every scene she's in is a comic gem. Her "fingernails on a blackboard" voice and massacre of the English language make her a figure of ridicule. However, in the end when she finally gets her comeuppance, one can't help feeling a little sorry for her.
This delightful film has been given its due on video. On VHS it can be purchased with the complete remastered soundtrack on CD. The laserdisc versions include one with commentary by film historian Ronald Haver (Criterion) and the film-only version from MGM/UA Home Video with a restored Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack., Last,but not least,is a masterful rendering on DVD with, unfortunately, no supplementary material to speak of.
This is truly a film for all time that can be watched just for its entertainment value and studied as probably the apex of the Hollywood musical in its Golden Age.

An exciting, unfortunately forgotten movie.
I wish this movie was on VHS or DVD so I could enjoy it again. It is a nail-biting thriller, that doesn't resort to mindless violence to generate suspense. The acting is great, the plot unique and the action practically non-stop.

The Bronx A-rab strikes again....!
Thanks to the now inexplicable popularity of the very silly and irritating fluff entitled "The Prince who was a Thief" the Bronx A-rab young Tony Curtis and his appropriately hammy romantic sidekick Piper Laurie get to strike again. Laurie couldn't even pronounce "Marrakesh" correctly (Moroccish? as in Morocco) in the earlier film - so much for the authenticity of these romps. This time around we have a better plot and lots of better actors stealing the show, particularly a very young and tall William Reynolds as the loyal sidekick of our hero, and the always impressive and striking Hugh O'Brian (whose name is wrongly spelled O'Brien in the credits) as quite the hunky villain. Either of these two outshines Curtis every minute either of them is in the same scene. Susan Cabot, in a supporting role as a fierce female archer and friend of the hero puts Piper Laurie quite in the shade. The costumes and color are outstanding and if you like Reynolds and/or O'Brian or Cabot you might enjoy this.

Colorful B-Western with a female angle
This is one of hundreds of B-Westerns made, but does have a few advantages. It is in photographed in in bright colors, which makes it dazzling to watch. The cast is filled with sturdy veterans like Bob Steele and Jim Davis, although Jack Buetel,star of 'The Outlaw' is as charmless as ever. Best selling point is lovely Mala Powers as the lead, a White girl raised by Indians, out to track killers of her adoptive parents.As a buckskinned beauty ,she is decidedly the main attraction. enjoyable fast moving western.
Ride the Man Down lasts 90 minutes but so much happens that probably 30 minutes more were needed. The story is about a huge ranch that when the owner dies in a blizzard, becomes prey to a lot of other cattlemen, since the laws about the property of land in that region were not very precise. Rod Cameron is Will Ballard, the man who tries to keep the ranch together. Ella Raines is Celia, the woman who will inherit the ranch and who is engaged to Forrest Tucker (Sam), a man that from the start you can see is no good. No good either is the father of Lottie (Barbara Britton) who is Cameron's fiancée. Bide Marriner (Brian Donlevy) and Red Courteen (Jim Davis) are the most significant candidates to invade the ranch. The real trouble starts when Ray Cavanaugh (Paul Fix) kills John Evarts (James Bell) who was managing the ranch shooting him on his back. As there is non stop action in this western, it keeps you interested, my only criticism would be for the final shootout that takes place at night in the dark. Shootouts in the dark might lower the film's budget but they take away what could be one of the best moments. Anyhow, I really enjoyed this film.

This movie is conducive to one's faith. It serves as a reminder of why one chooses to practice Christianity. It also helps to encourage people to make good decisions in the face of adversity. I give this film a 10.

One of my favourites...
I've never really been a fan of westerns, I didn't grow up with them and I always thought the genre was overrated personally.
Occasionally however a film comes along which has distinct appeal despite its genre, this is such a film. I'm not 100% sure why I liked it or why it stood out from the pack, there is a certain intangible aspect to it which really appeals; the closest thing that I can think of is `The Mountain' (1956, Spencer Tracy, Robert Wagner), it is a film which I believe has that same intangible quality.
I'd recommend this one for both western fan and non western fan (like myself) alike.

Dorothy McGuire's best performance
I'll admit it - it's taken me a long time to write a review for this movie, because Dorothy McGuire was my favorite actress and since she passed away last year I've had trouble watching this, my favorite movie of hers.
"Invitation" is truly a film unlike any other. Dorothy McGuire is so beautiful (although the department did their best to make her look plain for the part), and she captures the passion of this role completely. Dorothy plays Ellen, who discovers something that makes everything she knows seem like a fraud. She realizes she has to question her whole life, her family, and her husband's loyalty. I don't want to give anything away, because it's meant for you to go on the same journey as Ellen. Dorothy is simply heart-breaking, and in my opinion it was the performance of a lifetime.
The supporting cast is superb, most notably Van Johnson and Ruth Roman, but this movie really belongs to Dorothy. She carries the whole film on her shoulders, and never falters once. It's a very emotional film, and I am still saddened when I think of her loss. She was an actress I always had a great respect for, and always hoped to meet. But, as she herself says at the end of the film, "There is something much more important than keeping alive, and that is knowing that you have lived."

A beautiful film- and not only at Christmas.
It's too bad that this film is unavailable in the United States. Many years ago it was given to me by a friend who taped it off some obscure broadcast station. I've shown it every year since and have never grown tired of it. There is much truth in this film, and all of its characters reveal something of themselves that we can all identify with. And what a cast-- Ralph Richardson, Celia Johnson, Margaret Leighton, Denholm Elliot, and Hugh Williams! Richardson's parson is one, regardless of one's faith, we would all love to know. And Johnson and Leighton display acting of the highest order. Elliot is superb as the restless son, and Williams as a world weary but understanding and compassionate friend of the family has never been better. This is a film that deserves wide attention and should be a Christmas staple. It is not only my favorite Christmas movie, but also one my ten favorite films of all time.
