One of those unusual westerns with two women as the central characters... such as in "Johnny Guitar" and "Jubilee Trail," among others. During the Civil War in a town run by ruthless people, bad Kate has it in for darling Sally but stay tuned to the climactic ending to see how this all works out. Definitely a cheap oater with few production values, but it does have lively performances from Joan Leslie and Audrey Totter. If you know these actresses, then you know who plays whom. Fourth-billed Leslie is actually the star of this dopey-titled film and is always a joy to watch. For those who love women fight scenes, this has one of the fun ones. So glad I have it on my homemade VHS as this little-seen film is unlikely to ever be on DVD.

Tally Ho! A delightful RAF squadron story with reminders of the terrifying reality of wartime life.
Angels One-Five is a story of the trials and tribulations of life on an RAF base during World War II. Some great scenes of Hurricanes on the ground, taking off, in the air and landing.
The Film is shot at RAF Neethley which I understand is actually RAF Kenley in real life. Some of the flying scenes look distinctly home-made however the story is powerful enough to forgive the shortcomings of the 1950s special effects department.
Lovely 1950s English accents and light hearted events go towards making this film quaint in style but the harsh reality of war is impressed upon the viewer making it a poignant but enjoyable experience.
I love this film and I return to it again and again and thoroughly enjoy it every time.

This was probably Ilsa Werners first film in German ,since her divorce from an American journalist that same year,Lets face it the 1940 version was a lot better than this.I had not seen the 1935 version,but, this was the first version to be shot in color and made as a Hiemat type film .Gerhard Reidmann made an good Adam, but Jopie Heesters version was a lot Better, but nevertheless his Adam was good,Eva Probst Christal was a lot better in the singing department, since the 1963 version, Cornelia Froboess only had a fair voice .Both Reidman and Probst were married in real life at one time.This was Wolf Aulbachs Retty's first appearance in a color film as well as Character actor and some time directer,Gunther Luthers, he appeared in make love to me and great freedom street, also his first appearance in a color feature.It's about the same story Christl wants Adam to have a better job so they can get married ,bu, Adam gets mad at her when she talk to the Prince for the position out of fear they might be carrying on.When Chrtistel goes in instead of Wolf Aulbach Retty,its Gunther taken his place ,while wolf goes to the gambling casinos.Gerhard feels she having an affair and grabs the firs women that show up Princess Marie Louise , incognito , with her friend? or lady in waiting?Ernestine,played by Erni Mangold ,to catch Wolf coming back from having his affairs though the small town,This movie starts during the celebration.This is also a Heimat version of the play.In Hiemat film there is always one celebration after another. The best tradition of US (almost B) movies in costume
The movie was broadcast this afternoon on french TV (France 3). Never heard about it before. The action takes place half in a fake Hollywood France of the "XVIIIème siècle", half on location in the real beauty of Guatemala. Delmer Daves is for sure a professional entertainer (see "Broken Arrow"), and the movie follows the best tradition of US (almost B) movies in costume, like Fritz Lang masterpiece "Moonfleet". The typography of the production credits and cast is great (in the "Drums Along the Mohawk" style, though inferior), the colors amazing, and the scenes shot in the ruins and landscapes in Guatemala - with the locals Indians - are truly beautiful. The political message against "money for money" and for freedom (Jean-Paul, the hero, is a "slave" in the French society of that time) is naive but OK. Cornel Wilde is a strange actor, but not as bad as I fear. He's good in action scenes, and can be stirring when the camera is close to his virile face. Not that sexy, but he is "un bel homme" as old French ladies would say. He and Delmer Daves must have been very proud of his great body : he's half naked twice (in 1953!), and not just a second. Anne Bancroft was a débutante, but she's very courageous in her part, a bitchy and cynic Marquise. The only problem is Constance Smith. Because she is not Debra Paget, the incredible actress of "Das Indische Grabmal". She is so not pithy, and that's a thousand pities.

Lite Sirk
The forms the final part of Sirk's early Americana trilogy. As with the first two films, ("Has Anybody Seen my Gal" and "Meet Me at the Fair") it's is a lightweight, extremely affectionate look at American society in the early part of the 20th Century. Along side the abundant good nature, greed and political corruption were dealt with in those films, whereas in this case its acceptance and tolerance for the "other" to which focus is given.
Much of the charm of the movie stems from Ann Sheridan's winning and endearing performance in which she's ably paired by Sterling Hayden. Sirk handles the children particularly well and they turn in lovely comical performances.
While a lot of fun to watch, it's of special interest only in the context of Sirk's career in which he would go on to make far more important and weightier films than this.

B&W suspense movie in 1953 Vienna---not bad
A suspense B&W film from 1953 filmed in Vienna. A taxi driver (Donald Buka)working without papers (a common problem at the time as the Soviets wanted to repatriate all eastern Europeans who had fled to Austria) gives a ride to a man who is murdered in the cab. Buka takes his papers and disposes of the body.
There is some good suspense and some good red herrings. The wife (Joan Camden) of a jealous pianist entwines in the plot. She is trying to escape from her husband (Francis Lederer). The man killed in the above mentioned taxi was her ticket to freedom--it was her husband who murdered him.
There are a lot of close calls that are fun. However, I wished for a different ending---but Hollywood must have had a hand in this---bad things aren't allowed to go unpunished.
As another reviewer stated...somewhat wooden but kind of neat as it was indeed filmed in Vienna and has local actors and scenery.

Interesting, but can't decide what genre it is
I like Spaceways, but it is a pretty average movie on all fronts (for the fifties). Even though it does have the lovely Eva Bartok in it, and was directed by Hammer Film's legendary Terence Fisher, the film's main problem is that it can't decide what type of genre film it is, with all the various story elements running around. We've got a early British science fiction (hence the title, of course), a murder mystery, and a bit of early Cold War thriller all tumbled together.
The performances by all are solid if stereotypical, but the effects consist primarily of using the same stock footage of V-2 experiments that viewers would come to know and sometimes loathe in many movies later on (Fire Maidens From Outer Space, King Dinosaur, etc., etc.). The movie also seems to end a bit abruptly.
Luckily, the DVD of the movie is available at mall music/video stores for about $6 (I got my in a double pack with Kronos for $10), so it is at least affordable for the 50's Sci-Fi Completest out there.

A Decent Effort
As low-budget 1950's sci-fi stuff goes, this movie turns out to be relatively entertaining, certainly better than a lot of similar type movies from the era. The movie is set on a single night, and follows various government officials (police, military and communications) in the search for an alien being who's crash landed on earth, and who's killed a couple of people. The problem in finding him is that he's invisible, except when under ultra-violet lights. The effects are really what makes this seem very low-budget. They're pretty typical for the era, which means not very good. The movie also gets off to a bit of a slow start, as all we get to do for a while is watch "Mobile 1" and "Mobile 7" keep reporting into "Central" as they try to pinpoint the location of a mysterious signal of some type that's blocking communications. The first 10-15 minutes contain a lot of "Roger, Wilco, Out" kind of stuff. However, the actual story isn't bad and has a bit of mild suspense about it, particularly because we're not really sure about the motive of the alien. Did he deliberately kill the two people, or was it an accident or possibly self-defence? Ultimately, I thought this was a decent enough movie to spend a bit of time with. 6/10

Interesting exploration of gossip
Taunt tight suspenseful drama, I don't want to to say to much about the plot. Gene Tierney is very good in this very talkie film. Tierney is expressive and restrained and gives a great performance. Despite a few flaws in the script the film held my attention. Leo Genn was also very good as the besieged teacher, nice to see him in as a leading man. Glynis Johns seems a little too mature for the part of a teenage girl, overlooking that a nice performance. Pamela Brown is wonderful as the bitter Aunt. The direction seemed very controlled. Overall an interesting film about gossip and the damage it can do to peoples lives. The performances from the two stars to supporting cast make this Film, Tierney and Genn stands out. The strong production value of the film is grade A. Beautifully filmed in England.

Audie Murphy helps the Ute Indians in solid little western
Among the two dozen or so westerns Audie Murphy made for Universal Pictures from 1950-1966, DRUMS ACROSS THE RIVER (1954) is one of the better ones, featuring a gold miners-vs.-Indians plot with Audie caught firmly in the middle. It's fast-paced, full of action, and features a host of lively character actors, including some great villains.
Audie plays a wagon freighter in a Colorado mining town who is, initially, a witting pawn in a plot by a group of Denver mine bosses to stir up trouble with the local Ute Indians in order to get gold concessions on their land. Audie's dad, Sam (Walter Brennan), is a friend of the Indians and, following a shootout with the Utes in which Sam is wounded, Audie meets with the Ute chief (Morris Ankrum) and his son Taos (Jay Silverheels) and negotiates a temporary peace. Unfortunately, the hired guns working for the mine bosses continue to stir things up and force Audie to aid in a stage robbery by abducting his dad and threatening to kill him. When Audie is charged with murder after the robbery, he has to keep quiet to insure Sam's safety. In the final stretch of the movie, Audie has to break free, save his dad, subdue the bad guys, clear himself and avert a battle between Indians and cavalry. The whole story is told in 78 compact minutes.
Unassuming war hero-turned-western star Murphy was at his best in parts like this, playing an ordinary westerner caught up in a tumultuous situation and having to fight his way out and summon up the moral courage to do the right thing. He always looked best when he faced down truly formidable bad guys and here he faces one of the best western villains of the 1950s. Lyle Bettger, who had one of the most sinister smiles in movie history, specialized in corrupt western capitalists (ranchers, miners, saloon owners, railroad men) who could be utterly smooth and charming one minute and murderously evil the next. Here he's the miners' lead troublemaker and is joined by a great rogues' gallery made up of future TV star Hugh O'Brian as the black-clad Morgan, who also smiles a lot, and a quartet of thugs played by frequent heavies James Anderson, George Wallace, Lane Bradford and former B-western star Bob Steele. In addition, there's Mara Corday as a voluptuous (and very attractive) saloon girl who does some of Bettger's dirty work.
Walter Brennan is very good in a rare turn as an upright authority figure and father. Jay Silverheels plays a sympathetic Indian and leads a band of Utes who appear to be played predominantly by actual Indians rather than the usual painted-up white extras. The Technicolor film was shot partly on the Universal backlot with some fine location work at key California western sites, including one dramatic desert spot representing the Indians' sacred burial ground. This was director Nathan Juran's third film with Murphy.

Pleasant saga of honest gambler and eccentric family entanglement
This is a pleasant drama with Power playing an unusual man of honor, a gambler who desires to open a gambling casino in New Orleans that will be strictly honest. He becomes involved with a local family, the Dureaus, the patriarch of which is a noble and honest gentlemen who is plagued with two headstrong children. Piper Laurie plays the spoiled daughter who is in love with Power but won't admit it. John Baer plays the nasty brother who is a compulsive gambler and a coward to boot. Baer is quite a handsome young actor - one wonders what became of him. There are duels, double crosses, runs on banks, you name it. It amounts to very little but is certainly consistently entertaining. John McIntyre does well as Power's crusty sidekick. The film earned a single Oscar nom - for Sound - although there was nothing special about this category achievement. It deserved but did not get noms for Art Direction, Costume Design and Score. By the way, watch for Gwen Verdon, doused in Lena Horne's "light Egyptian" make-up in a solo voodoo dance. All in all, pleasant but don't go out of your way.

Crosby at his best!
Why this film has been neglected over the years is hard to understand. This is not quite what you would expect from Crosby in that it is a superb dramatic acting role for him. In my opinion Crosby is more convincing in this film than he was in "The Country Girl."
The story is about an American war reporter who returns to Paris after the war to look for his lost son. Lovely shots of Paris and great acting from all concerned. A real tearjerker from start to finish.
Recently played on Turkish T.V. surely one of the video companies will make this available to the public. Otherwise I would suggest a mass exodus to Turkey, it really is that good!

Decent Noir
This is a kind of "B" picture but it has a good cast and the story is intriguing enough. It stars Lloyd Bridges and Moira Lister, two good actors. An assassination happens as Frank Prior (Bridges) gets off a plane in London, where he is to see Pauline French (Lister) for the first time in six years, since the war. The person who was assassinated, Kendall Brown, is known to Pauline French and Scotland Yard is on the case. Frank tries to help French in trying to find out how she in involved. The Limping Man of the title is a shadowy figure, which is why I'm calling this a noir film. Its pretty good, but the ending, which I won't divulge, is strange. Its fun to watch up till then and, at 75 minutes, goes by quickly. Obviously not perfect, its good Saturday afternoon watching.

A new cottage is being built in the town, and there is a "competition" to see who gets to live in it - the owners have stated it will be given to "the married couple with the most number of grandchildren", so that the cottage can be passed down through the family, as if an heir loom. This leads to frantic tallying of the number of grandchildren everyone has and a lot of sniping done by various little old ladies whilst their husbands look pained at the fuss.
A very oddball little film (little, it's only just over an hour in run time); that is anything but predictable! A few births, deaths, and marriages ensue that you'll have no idea who is going to get the cottage, until the moment the key is handed out. Overall, I'd give it about a 6 or 7 out of 10. At least if you don't like it, you don't have to sit through much before it's over!

Stanwyck vs. Reagan!
Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan star together in this tale of the growing state of Montana, becoming a landowner, fighting for land, and making one's dreams into reality. It all sounds rather profound, important, or dramatic, doesn't it? Well, I probably make it sound more so than it really is. This is basically Indians vs. White Man, The Law vs. White Man Selling Ammunition to Indians, Indian Brother vs. Indian Brother, and Stanwyck vs. Reagan. The later sounds more interesting, doesn't it? Well, the viewer is led to believe that Reagan is hired as a gunslinger to get rid of Barbara when she won't leave "her" land, after White Man got Indians to raid her family settlement, which killed her father. They don't know Stanwyck. That only made her more determined to stay, and mad. Watch out! The presence of Stanwyck and Reagan elevates this otherwise generic film, which emphasizes the Indians too much in the first half. It does get better in its last 30 to 40 minutes with Stanwyck declaring war. But, there's too much of everyone's against everyone else and trying to keep up with who's on whose side and who's betraying whom, and the actors portraying the Indians slow down the film with their, to be frank, pretty lame acting. By the end of the film, you'll probably like it on the whole, due to the chemistry and flirting between Barbara and Ronnie and their being on the screen more together near the end of the film. But, you'll also wish they were in other better films than this.
