Review :

A splendid film of Spanish cinema by master Vajda.

During the 19th century, Sierra Morena and Ronda, lands were proliferating where the bandits, who alone or in bands, engulfing the region with relentless assaults and murders. By ironies of History, many bandits were sung in couplets and romances of blind as benefactors of the humble and needy, giving rise to the legends of the generous bandits. In fact, almost all of them were ruthless and ambitious men, who could not be expected no sense humanitarian. As "Lucero", whose name runs throughout the mountains as a helper of the poor people.

The film started with a "copla of blind" ("Romance Lucero") which is a whole praise dedicated to a bandit, "Lucero". Sung in the town square, in which the first stanzas are Interpreted by a blind, continuing with the voice of Maria Dolores Pradera following the camera in a stroll through the streets of Ronda. Then the script back in time and we know in the inside a canteen to "Juan Pablo Osuna" (Rossano Stott), a bully son of a landowner in the region, fond women, who is abandoned by his promised "Consuelo" (Emma Penella), fed up with his licentious life. After losing in the game, 40,000 real and before the inability to get the money to pay the debt, after hearing the tribulations of "Don Felix" (José Isbert) on a kidnapping of that was the victim by the bandit "Lucero" (Fosco Giachetti) and his band and of which came alive after paying a substantial rescue. "Juan Pablo" plans next to his friends a kidnapping his father in as requested by the 40,000 actual his debt. The note that is nailed to the door of the farmhouse signed by "Lucero" in the requested 70,000 real under penalty of killing the father and that he believes product of the plan outlined above next to his friends, is really "Lucero" had been made and has abducted the father.

Ladislao Vajda, performed a strong, rough and very entertaining film, shot in the natural scenes where the action Zahara de la Sierra, Ronda and the landscape, in which apart from the magnificent history of revenge and redemption that the axis of the script, it offers us a crude and truthful portrait, of the customs and habits of the people of the time, and to the cruel and savage bandits that infestations the area, very different from the romantic bandits of the couplets.

The couple of principle was sung by Maria Dolores Pradera contrasting her beautiful voice with the best cruel misdeeds of the bandits, all with some excellent mishandling of the camera, levels of fund, approaches and close-up extremely hard and narrative, with a magnificent soundtrack composed by José Muñoz Molleda, usual collaborator of Edgar Neville.

We are facing a splendid film of Spanish cinema by one of the best directors Ladislao Vajda.
