At the start of World War II, Cmdr. Ericson is assigned to convoy escort HMS Compass Rose with inexperienced officers and men just out of training. The winter seas make life miserable enough, but the men must also harden themselves to rescuing survivors of U-Boat attacks, while seldom able to strike back. My father's experience in the Royal Navy
My father served in the Royal Navy for 42 years. He joined in 1914 and retired in 1956 and was in active service throughout both World Wars. He told me that the film 'The Cruel Sea' was the most realistic account of how it was during those terrible times.
