A forgotten pleasure

This is a delightful comedy and, what is more, it is neither devoid of depth nor lacking in intelligence. The idea is simple. Fans make a film star weary. He is so fed up with life than he accepts becoming the prize of a love lottery. He finds love on the way, but can't get married since he is engaged to the future winner. The winner -another girl- realizes after a day with him that her first love is more her type. The End. Admittedly, it's a slim story line, but David Niven makes it great fun, and Charles Crichton adds some delightfully ironical moments (he did make "A fish called Wanda" later). All in all a much under-rated comedy, worth many better-known ones. Definitely worth seeing.

The last, and aptly-titled, of Gene Autry's starring westerns finds Pony Express rider Gene Autry (Gene Autry) deciding to start a stage line to carry the mail, since with the coming of the telegraph, the need for the Pony Express no longer exists. He is fired by his boss Tom McEwen (John Downey) for being disloyal. Scheming townsmen Clyde Vesey (Howard Wright), Jess Hogan (Arthur Space') and Dutch Murdoch (Gregg Barton), in order to get a government mail contract for themselves, try to discredit McEwen's Pony Express riders by holding up rider Johnny Blair Dickie Jones), who is in love with McEwen's daughter Katie (Kathlee Case'). A Last Ride

Good, strong story line lifts this final Autry programmer above the usual. Just as in real life, Gene sees a good business opportunity where others don't-- in the movie it's stage-line mail delivery replacing the older, more limited pony express. But he can't convince his pony express employer to partner up in starting a stage-line. Still, Gene's a loyal cuss, and can't bring himself to ignore the express when bad guy rivals try to sabotage his former boss. There are more plot complications and character conflict than usual, probably reflecting a need to break away from old formulas.

Dick Jones makes an energetic express rider, even getting to passion-kiss Elizabeth Taylor look-alike Kathleen Case. Of course, by this time Gene's nearly 50 and looking understandably middle-aged, so the kids carry much of the plot. Two of the highlights-- the bucking bronco scene is very well done, while Gene's little singing duet with Burnette comes across as a delightfully fitting farewell to a memorable movie partnership. Also, I was kind of hoping that Gene, who started out as a telegrapher, would get a last scene working the telegraph. But maybe he didn't know his role here would be his final feature (the TV series ended in 1955). Anyway, this is not only an entertaining 60 minutes, but also an interesting and informative one as well. A quality final note for a much beloved performer and cowboy icon.

Nanard

"Nanard" is French for "abysmal dud"

Jean Boyer made estimable comedies when Fernandel was at hand:"Senechal Le Magnifique" and "Le Couturier De Ces Dames" ;when he could recruit Michel Simon and Arletty (" Circonstances Attenuantes" ) it was a delight.

Maurice Chevalier is absolutely unbearable as an old beau who wants to be still young ("tomorrow I'm 20" is one of his repetitive songs) .Only ham can describe his work;the same can apply to the seven girls who pass for his illegitimate daughters (?),for his son (played by stage and TV actor Louis Velle),who is more interested in insects than in women ,for the servant (an abominable Paolo Stoppa);as though it were not enough ,there is also an entomologist who resembles Hergé's Professeur Tournesol (Pr Calculus).

The subject of old age getting closer had already been tackled by Sacha Guitry ,but Jean Boyer is not Sacha Guitry,by a long shot.

an excellent film and good remake of Greene's novel

A fairly good remake of the Graham Greene novel. Though the ending is different from the novel, the tragic theme is prevalent throughout the film. Trevor Howard brings out Scobie's inner torment credibly - as the principled police officer scared of the misery around him. The colonial aspects of the time period are handled well, you can almost feel the heat and humidity and the occasional fevers that rack the body. This combined with good acting, flesh out the Greene novel faithfully. A terrific movie about the machinations of the human conscience, and what it can lead to.

Rosemary Bow is breathtaking

After seeing The Golden Mistress, I can not understand why she did not become a really big star!

The story line is totally politically incorrect but the movie is a vehicle to show the photogenic actress in various stages of undress.

Really, worth a viewing.

Decent B-Action Feature

This is a decent if imperfect B-grade action feature, which today offers the added attraction of seeing the contemporary road-racing cars. The story uses a familiar plot idea, and simply adds the racing setting to give it some extra turns. The cast and characters are solid, though none of them really stands out.

John Ireland plays a wrongly-accused fugitive who kidnaps a female racer played by Dorothy Malone, and then heads for the border in her car. Roger Corman's story has some good sequences of action and drama, but there are a number of other stretches where things become dull or repetitive. The climactic race sequence offers an adequate finale, though it leaves you with the feeling of slightly unrealized potential.

The movie has enough strengths to be at least average for its time and genre. If you can overlook a few flaws, it's worth seeing as a way to pass an hour or so.
