Exceptional Noir--a must-see for fans of the genre

This is an exceptional Film Noir movie that almost merits a score of 9--it's THAT good. Like good Noir, it features some of the ugliest and scariest actors and I applaud the producers for finding such a motley group! Jack Elam, Lee Van Cleef and Neville Brand are definitely the ugliest and toughest looking heavies of the age and here they all work together on a heist. The movie also stars John Payne and Preston Foster. While these two guys weren't as hideous as the other three, they were both well past their handsome prime--hence they were great Noir characters! In addition, the film is bloody and violent--definite pluses for Noir. While this may sound like Noir films are super-violent, they were compared to the average picture of the day but pale in comparison to more recent films. I like them because they are so gritty and realistic in their blunt portrayal of crime. In this case, watching John Payne slap the snot out of Van Cleef is an amazing scene. As for the plot, it's amazingly complex and interesting. So good, in fact, that I don't want to talk about the heist--lest if ruin the suspense. Suffice to say, it's well worth seeing with great writing, acting and all the elements you are looking for in Noir. A must-see for lovers of the genre.

The girl is later found murdered and Manning is picked up by Scotland Yard for questioning and is later arrested and charged with murder. The trial is scheduled for London's Old Bailey. Manning's wife, Jill, convinced he is innocent, fights for and wins the sympathy of Council-for-the-Defense Peter Tanner, and he is opposed at the trial by his father, prosecuting-attorney Geoffrey Tanner. The trail is presided over by Justice Harrington, whose wife is in the hospital undergoing an operation. It soon becomes evident, following the testimony of prosecution-witness Horace Clifford, that the evidence points to Manning's guilt. Dickie Attenborough on Song

I have awarded this film 7/10 and was surprised as a 67 year old regular viewer of films that I had not seen this long neglected title on TV before.I was given this Christmas from my wife about 12 movies of my choosing after visiting my favourite contact of rare dvds in North London.I was attracted to this title by the inclusion in the cast of actress Cathy O'Donnell who won acclaim as a newcomer acting in "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946), playing the young fiancé then wife of a U.S.seaman (Harold Russell) who actually lost both his wrists in WW11.

There is no point giving the plot again but my wife & I both thought the mother was totally naive and not a little stupid allowing her very young daughter to roam over bomb sites rather than being escorted to school.However since I was 8 in 1954 I can state there was a much more casual approach by parents to child safety then like climbing trees, playing on bomb & building sites, walking by canals and walking home from school alone.Perhaps it was the effect of living through the war.Of course the 1954 British Board of Film censors would never have allowed a certificate for a film portraying murderous, psychotic paedophilia on cinema screens.Also in my DVD collection is Graham Greene's "Brighton Rock"(1949) which shows the depth of roles Dickie Attenborough could play.Here he plays an innocent cabbie in the wrong place & time who gets accused of the little girl's murder.To solve why Cathy O'Donnell has an American accent she plays Dickie's Canadian wife in this movie.She believes in her husband and fights to get him the best legal counsel for his defence.The real killer was spotted by my wife.

Invasion of the Booty Snatchers

It's worth noting that this ultra-low-budget splicing-together of unmatched stock footage was mocked and panned even in its own day, so it should not be viewed seriously as an accurate document of Cold War paranoia. Even in the depths of the Red Scare, most Americans weren't stupid enough to be scared by crap like this. It was more like a super-cheapie public service announcement for the military-industrial complex. If you fast forward through most of the stock WW2 battle scenes, which are endless, and slow down for the "story" scenes, it's a mildly amusing exercise in what-if? science fiction -- doofy and utterly implausible, but good for some wry smiles. I mean, you gotta love that the hypnotist fortune teller is named Ohman. It's also kind of interesting that many, many more "serious," bigger-budget invasion and terrorist- plot films since this one have followed a pretty similar storyline, if more competently. Add the general atmosphere of paranoia post-9/11, and this thing is worth a look, with the FF button to the metal.

A childhood favorite

I haven't seen this movie since I was a child but even then I preferred it over the Shirley Temple film.

The version I saw was dubbed into English. Normally that irritated me (and still does, the rare times I see a dubbed movie--nowadays they're more often subtitled) but it actually made it easier to get into the movie because I didn't have to read any subtitles (and I don't know German). I read well above my grade level but it still would have been distracting. Now I probably wouldn't mind.

This movie is much more faithful to the book than the 1937 version.

Probably because it was filmed in Switzerland, where the story takes place, it has beautiful scenery. They didn't have use any back projections and sound stages for the outdoor sequences, something I noticed even as a child.

I looked forward to each time it came on TV in the Los Angeles area, where I grew up. I don't why they stopped showing it unless it was because the Shirley Temple version, which began to be shown a lot at that time, simply displaced it. If so, it's a shame. I'd love to see it again (and again and again, just like back then).

I was always fascinated with the story because my great-grandmother was from Switzerland and was a child at the time the book was originally published.

Possibly the funniest movie that NOBODY has apparently ever seen

A hilarious, original, and beautiful domestic comedy. The plot is pretty bare-bones: a married couple has a baby, and we spend the first year following their good times and hardships. They live the 1950s ideal marriage, or at least that's how they'd like to appear. Joe, the husband (Robert Cummings), is forced to quit his great but low-paying job as an architect when they can't afford a professional nanny to help his wife, Betsey (Barbara Hale), learn exactly how to take care of their son. Instead, he has to beg his father for a thankless job as a door-to-door washing machine salesman (and to boot the washing machines are crap!). Joe's work is hellish, and it puts a strain on his relationship with Betsey. When he gets home from work, he wants to expect what every respectable 1950s husband has: a hot meal and a pretty wife who's prepared it. He doesn't get what he wants, of course, and, after a big fight, Betsey gets back at him by wearing a sexy negligée, preparing his hot dinner perfectly, pouring him a tall glass of beer, and stuffing his pipe full. Sounds good, but she fills his beer glass too full, throws him down onto the couch (without spilling his beer, amazingly), overstuffs his pipe, and gives him dinner on a silver platter, setting it on his knees as he lays on the couch, his hand busy guarding his beer. When she devilishly asks him if this is how he'd like it, his mouth full of pipe stem, he nods giddily. He's too oblivious to realize that she's being sarcastic, and only realizes what she was doing when she runs away crying. Every aspect of the film is masterfully written and directed. It's worthy of Preston Sturges, the equal of many of his films. And like Sturges' films, it manages to be both hilarious and emotionally touching. The film is narrated by their son from an unspecified later date, which is quite cute. When I came to IMDb to rate it and comment on it, I was utterly shocked to see that it had not even received five votes. This is easily the best film that I've seen with that sorry distinction. 10/10.

Whe 'Sach' Jones inherits a rundown farm in the South, he becomes the target of a group of feuding hillbillies who want to find out if he is a member of the Jones family they have killed or run away. Alias Slip and Jones

While shooting the breeze at Louie's "Sweet Shop", Leo Gorcey (as Slip Mahoney) and "The Bowery Boys" learn Huntz Hall (as Horace Debussy "Sach" Jones) has inherited a plantation south of the Mason-Dixon line. Adopting a southern accent, Mr. Hall accompanies Mr. Gorcey, David "Condon" Gorcey (as Chuck), and Benny "Bennie" Bartlett (as Butch) to the "Jones" farm. There, they are startled to learn the area's hillbilly "Smith" family spends their time shooting everyone in the "Jones" clan dead - putting Hall's life in danger. Gags include Gorcey gets cow's milk sprayed in his face, and Hall crowing like a rooster after eating chicken feed. Cock-a-doodle-don't.
