Two great writers, and a screenplay by James Agee

Those are two totally different stories, one might ask what brings them together, and most will find no answer, but I will. Stephen Crane and Joseph Conrad are the the two most meaningful writers I have ever read. "The Outcast of the Islands", "Lord Jim" and "The Red Badge of Courage" have reached into me the way no other book did. The first half of the film, based on Conrad's "The Secret Sharer" is about a captain (James Mason) unsure of himself, becoming through a crisis more of a man. The second half, from a story of Stephen Crane "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky" is about a Marshall, (Robert Preston), who just got married (Marjorie Steele excellent as the bride) traveling for the first time in a Pullman to his home town where he will meet a man who wants to kill him. There is no better example of how a good screenplay (James Agee) can make a film that otherwise would seem like a TV movie, become such a delight to see.

Wonderful

Clifton Webb is "Dreamboat," in this 1954 film. Webb plays a silent film star named Bruce Blair who is now a college professor under what one assumes is his real name, Thornton Sayre. All is well until his silent films begin to appear hosted by his former co-star (Ginger Rogers) on that new popular medium, television. The college board calls for his resignation, so Sayre goes to New York with his brainy daughter (Anne Francis) to get an injunction to stop the televising of his old films.

Webb was an underrated actor who could do the acerbic queen beautifully, but one forgets he was also a gifted comedian and a moving dramatic actor - "The Man Who Never Was" and "Titanic" being two prime examples of his capabilities. He also was a trained opera singer, something the New York theater audiences, alas, only got to hear. In "Dreamboat," his silent film character is a cross between John Gilbert, Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Webb does a terrific job overplaying the silent film acting.

Ginger Rogers is wonderful as the glamorous, conniving ex-costar, Gloria Marlowe, but I have to agree with one comment, that the two stars had little chemistry. The role was originally offered to Marlene Dietrich - she and Webb might have been quite funny together.

Anne Francis is the plain Jane daughter in an early role, and Jeffrey Hunter is the gorgeous Bill Ainslee in an early role for him, a man assigned by his agency boss (Sam Levitt) to escort Francis around town. They make a great couple; both appeared in the 1965 programmer 'Brainstorm' to excellent effect. By that time, their studio days were over; Hunter's film career had disintegrated, and Francis would do her most of her career in television. They both still looked fabulous, though.

Very, very entertaining. Highly recommended.

Three women

A portmanteau movie, made of three sketches flouting chronology ,since the first segment takes place just after WW2 whereas the final segment takes us back to,so to speak ,Aristophane .The main thread is " women through the war' as a man whose face we never see warns us:"you don't know me,just call me destiny!I want you to meet three women :Elizabeth,a victim of the war,Jeanne, who made war and Lysistrata, who fought against the war."The connection between the segments is somewhat tenuous though.

Segment one :"Elizabeth" a routine military melodrama ,"to each his own " style ,the short has emotion and sensitivity going for it;it was one of Claudette Colbert's few European parts (her most famous here is Madame DE Montespan in Sacha Guitry's " Si Versailles M'Etait Conté ) and she gives a restrained performance, displaying a quivering sensitiveness .Colbert Portrays a war widow, coming to Italy to take the remains of her husband killed in a small village where a peasant (Eleonora Rossi-Drago)gave him a shelter. There's a good chemistry between the American and the Latin actress and Marcello Pagliero's directing is effective when it does not succumb to some clichés such as the stormy night(s).Prologue and epilogue in the cemetery are a nice tribute to the American soldiers killed in action .And this line of Colbert is moving: "his father will be near him".

Segment two :"Jeanne" :you've guessed it ,the Jeanne in question is the maid of Orleans ,who else?one of the greatest tales of French history told and told and told and TOLD.So it is to Jean Delannoy's credit to spare us Domremy, the king in Chinon,Orleans,Reims ,Rouen ,Reims and the stake .Delannoy 's story which happens in a couple of hours is the beginning of the end when Jeanne had her moments of doubt and fear .Charles The Seventh had almost let her down and she would have to continue the fight with a handful of soldiers .Delannoy's directing, which the Nouvelle Vague trashed in a shameful way,is up to scratch and the dreary landscape (created in studio) reflects Joan's debacle .The lines by Aurenche and Bost show Jean Anouilh's influence ("L'Alouette" ,his play about Joan was staged the year before). But Delannoy was a believer and when Joan is about to give up,she becomes a miracle worker:a baby ,dead before christening ,to his mother's great despair ,comes back to life for a short while in the heroine's arms.

The main problem is the choice of the actress:Michèle Morgan,34 at the time, was twice Joan's age and it shows !She was obviously too old for the part and Otto Preminger did not make the same mistake with Jean Seberg.A moment of real happiness: fabulous Andrée Clément plays the small part of the mother ;she had already teamed up with Morgan and Delannoy ("La Symphonie Pastorale" ) :in her memoirs ,Morgan speaks highly of her co-star :" La Symphonie Pastorale" belongs to her ,it's her film, not mine"

Segment three:"Lysistrata".It's a big disappointment, mainly when so many great names are involved :Christain -Jaque,his then-wife Martine Carol,Raf Vallone and Henri Jeanson ! It's the first time I've found the writer's lines crude and witless .Jeanson was a pacifist ,his anti-militarism was famous, and he was the man who could tell the tale of Lysistrata ,a hippie-before-time ,who urges men to make love not war .But the actors overplay and are almost unbearable ,left by director Christian-Jaque to their own devices .A farce which is not funny at all.If at least they had borrowed from Guitry! The plot:Lysistrata urges Greek women to refuse to give themselves to their husbands till they do not declare peace!A good subject but a bad treatment and an anti-climax.You can leave after "Jeanne",you will not miss a lot!

Review :

A little dull and Stack overacted, but it's better than many of the reviews indicated.

I will admit that "Bwana Devil" is not a great movie, but to compare this groundbreaking 3-D movie to "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is utterly ridiculous, as "Bwana Devil" is not bad--but it is slightly below average. The negatives are Robert Stack's overacting and forgetting his accent frequently as well as a few cheesy scenes (seeing a stuffed lion tossed on Nigel Bruce when he was supposedly being attacked was unintentionally funny). The HUGE plus is that this film was made mostly in Africa and looks so much better than the tons of schlocky African films of the 1930s-50s.

The story is a dramatization of a real story of a couple man-eating lions and the man who ultimately killed them. It's the same story you'll see in the newer and better "Ghost and the Darkness"--so my advice is see this film instead. But, if you don't, you'll essentially learn the same story...along with Stack's less than stellar performance. Not a bad film at all--just not one that will bowl you over, either.

Thunderhawk's Gamble

Other commentators here have done an admirable job in addressing where "Charge at Feather River" fits in within the canon of Western movies, its similarity to "The Dirty Dozen" and other films of that genre, the use of 3-D effects, and even the origin of the Wilhelm scream. But what about the climactic, epic-making confrontation between Miles Archer (Guy Madison) and Chief Thunderhawk (Fred Carson)? In the action/adventure movies of the 1950s and 1960s, one knows the leaders will meet and fight it out. But when and where and how will it happen?

Thunderhawk has plenty of reasons to want to kill Archer himself. The whites are building a railroad through Cheyenne territory; their rescue effort has led to the death of Thunderhawk's bride-to-be. The cavalry troopers are occupying an island in the middle of the Feather River itself.

In the first charge, the Cheyenne have been repulsed. Their bodies float about the river. Stray horses amble about without direction. But the calm following this is deceptive. The Cheyenne prepare for another charge and this time Thunderhawk will personally take command.

At first, all goes well and a couple of the Guardhouse Brigade are picked off. Then, Thunderhawk commits his fatal mistake. At the head of about thirty to fifty braves, he veers off with only a half a dozen or so warriors to approach the island from the rear while the main bunch of Indians continues to hurl spears and to get shot, falling off their horses, and then bobbing in the river.

Thunderhawk, recognizable in his eagle feather headdress, leads his handpicked braves slowly up an embankment, on their bellies, in preparation for this "stealth" attack. But when they reach the crest of the embankment, above the river's edge, all goes wrong. They are seen too soon and all but Thunderhawk get shot down. Meanwhile, the main war party is beginning to back off.

Thunderhawk, without rifle or spear, cut off from all his men, draws his knife, preparing to do battle with Archer, one against one. Thunderhawk's very life now depends upon his skill with a knife. The bare-chested Cheyenne war chief, confident, powerful, motivated, eager for revenge and victory, squares off against Archer.

After only a few moments, Archer has maneuvered the chief to a slight earthen rise above the embankment, so that the daring, risk-taking, bold Cheyenne war chief stands a little bit above the cavalry officer. Archer goes for Thunderhawk's proud, taut, copper-bronze, native leader belly. As the knife goes in (off camera), Thunderhawk grunts in disbelief and topples, about to fall over the embankment. In a very clever shot, Guy Madison is seen looking over the embankment as Thunderhawk might have seen the view, his last before his death. Thunderhawk gives out a scream of terror as he tumbles down the embankment, splashing into the river. His horse makes way, only slightly, as the chief disappears under the water.

A valiant, determined, daring, native chief has lost his gamble.

Five astronauts travel to the dark side of the moon on a scientific expedition. There they discover a cave which somehow retains a breathable atmosphere. They remove their space suits and venture on, soon finding a buried city where the last members of a 2 million year old civilization greet them with food and drink. Review :

Miaou!

This film was originally released in full stereoscopic format in 1953, and a regular B/W print was released later under the title "Rocket to the Moon". The film is of historic interest as it was one of the first (perhaps the first) of many Sci-Fi movies about space travellers who encounter a "lost" civilization of nubile young women, not only in attractive dresses and perfect coiffures but also speaking perfect English. This theme was so successful that it has been repeatedly followed right up to today when everyone has a much more sophisticated understanding of the realities of space. Historically, it is interesting to compare this film with those of the same genre released more recently such as Femalien or the Emmanuelle in Space series. Over the two generations since Rocket to the Moon was released, films of this genre have gradually changed their intended appeal by becoming primarily skinflicks rather than Sci-Fi thrillers.

It is unfortunate that Hollywood quickly lost interest in the complexity of producing good stereoscopic films (which are most often now featured in specialist theatres such as the IMAX), and instead has followed what I feel has been a largely disasterous attempt to explore the potential of anthropomorphic lenses even though in the majority of cases these have no conceivable artistic contribution to make to the final product. Although produced for polarised projection, Catwomen of the Moon is one of the very few 3D films which has been made available on VHS tape in analglyphic (dual colour) stereographic format. It has also been released as a DVD, but in non-stereographic format. Whilst the analglyphic tape version will remain of interest to a most people interested in the history of the cinema, I find it very hard to understand the choice of this film for release as a regular DVD.

This film was not produced on such a low budget as some of its successors. The view of the rocket itself gives the impression that at a pinch this might be large enough for a small monkey, but for its period it makes a serious attempt to show the need for features such as spacesuits for the crew of the rocket. After their rocket lands on the dark side of the moon the astronauts find a deep cavern where air still exists and where these suits can be dispensed with. Scientific improbability returns when they travel back to the surface wearing casual sports clothes and encounter a fairly normal gravitational pull. More surprisingly (?), the cavern is occupied by giant spiders and a group of nubile catwomen who are threatened with extinction, not by the complete absence of any men but by the gradual loss of their air. Logically they therefore plan to steal the rocket and return to Earth in it. The whole plot is worked out in just over an hour (64 min) of quite easy watching; however the story (plot?) does not have the charm shown by the film Fire Maidens of Outer Space which appeared three years later. This is unfortunately not currently available in any home video format, although in my opinion it provides a more enjoyable example of movie nostalgia than the Catwomen.
