Captain John Smith (Anthony Dexter), returned fom the Jamestown colony, is telling his story before the Court of King James I (Anthony Eustral.) He tells of the unrest in the colony and how he set out to make peace with the Indians. He is captured and sentenced to death, but Pocahontas (Jody Lawrence) makes her celebrated intervention and, instead of a slaying, there is a wedding. Back at Jamestown, Smith makes efforts to keep the colony united and the Indians from attacking, in spite of the efforts of some in the colony who stir up trouble for their own gain. He exposes them and returns to England to give his report. He stays because Pocahontas, thinking he is dead, has remarried.

Despite whitewashing and other obvious flaws this film got most of it right....

This whitewashed version of the story doesn't say much about the disastrous first attempt at the Jamestown colony but despite the whitewashing, gets most of the subsequent story right. Jody Lawrence is a beautiful Pocahontas but looks to be in her twenties rather than the teen she really was. Unfortunately the Indians, in typical Hollywood ignorance of the day, are all wrong, looking like Sioux or other plains tribes instead of the southeastern coastals. But the basic story of her critical intervention is well told. Dexter is rather wooden and is so upstaged by Robert Clarke (better looking, and better actor) as John Rolfe, that the title almost needed to be changed to "John Rolfe and Pocahontas" since she became Mrs. John Rolfe anyway. A nice tribute to the Native American lady and an interesting glimpse of the commemorative statue raised to her memory in Britain adds a nice touch to the film. Nothing was mentioned about the gallant lady dying very young in London, thousands of miles from her home after succumbing to a rapid bout of white man's consumption (tuberculosis) The print I saw retained its original glorious color which added much to the effect, as did the period costumes.

FORGET STORY, CONCENTRATE ON THE MUSIC

In 1953 composer Theo Mackeben died; he was a very good composer of songs, light (film) music, serious music etc.; he was very important for the German cinema in the 30's and 40's.

Hardly surprising then that a film about or around him would be made. However, this film is centered around the music of Mackeben, but - as the credits state - not the life of Mackeben is portrayed. In stead the "bio" has been replaced by a story about an invented composer who composes the music of Mackeben; the script is that bad that words fail to describe it, let us hope that Mackeben had a more interesting life and certainly wife. The cast tries hard to make something out of it, but to no avail. Ingrid Stenn, as the composer's wife, has nothing else to do than to look worried. When the wife (separated in the meantime from her husband) does not want to reveal a difficult situation she is in and in the same conversation says that lately she has had no appetite for coffee (!), the viewer is of course aware of the situation - her conversation partner is not. Who ever wrote this scene must have had a bad case of caffeine poisoning.

If you are willing to forget the story and Hans Wolff's so-so direction as well (though he directs much better than in his first films), you still could have a wonderful time with Mackeben's music and the good performances of it. You also may want to indulge in game of association, like I did during watching:

Margot Hielscher superbly sings the title song and also the song "Frauen sind keine Engel" (incorporated in a nice revue number); this song she already sung in 1943 in the film with the same title and that was directed by Willi Forst (and I repeat what I wrote about Hielscher then: she might have been an angel herself, that voice!). And look who has a guest appearance as film director: Willi Forst for whom Hans Wolff formerly worked as editor and assistant-director. Forst refers to his own classic "Bel Ami" of 1939 and in his subtle and charming style sings the title song. You may want to find the association "Forst and the bare breasts" yourself.

His first films Hans Wolff made with Sonja Ziemann in the lead. In this film she has a guest appearance as ballet dancer and as far as I know, this film has given her the only opportunity to show herself in the profession before she turned to acting: that of ballet dancer. The production number for her may not be Hollywood standard, but it is very entertaining, well-danced and very imaginative. Other guest appearances are those of Zarah Leander (and what a fine lady she still is) and Kirsten Heilberg, whose performance of the second song (towards the end of the film) gave me shivers down my spine.

Of the cast I want to mention Georg Thomalla. This is a comedian I am not always to friendly of as he has the tendency not to keep himself in check. Here however he is charming and his acting (and thus the comedy he provides) is well-timed. He also has a song-and-dance number in which he gives a very good Maurice Chevalier impersonation.

All in all: I find this a very curious film that despite the terrible script, but thanks to the spirit of Mackeben entertained me enormously.

Excellent Musical drama

This is a real "Old Hollywood" musical bio pic. Some of the facts may have been altered to suit the plot but the basic truth of Jane Froman's life is there. Great songs, emotion, drama, tears, laughter and romance all in glorious colour. Susan Hayward is at her dramatic best in this feature, engaging, heartwarming and tough. Thelma Ritter is, as always, excellent as a no nonsense nurse, and Robert Wagner, early in his career, has a small, but poignant role. Over the top and totally enjoyable movie experience.

Authentic rendering of John Gay's 18th century musical, filmed in Technicolor, about Captain MacHeath, a highwayman, and his love for too many beautiful women. Betrayed by Jenny and Sukey, two of his bygone lovers, and temporarily freed by two others, MacHeath is arrested and condemned to death. While waiting to be hanged, the captain is entertained by a musical beggar, who has written an opera of which the highwayman is the hero.

Mack the Knife

This was a very enjoyable movie especially if you like period pieces and/or musicals. Hearing Laurence Olivier sing is reason enough to watch this. The cinematography is outstanding and the movie as a whole is very colorful.

Obviously, the song "Mack the Knife" made famous by Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra is based on this opera/movie. MacHeath is in the opera/movie as is Jenny Diver and Sukey Tawdrey. Louie Miller, Lotte Lenya and Lucy Brown are mentioned in the song (and not in the opera/movie) but, after all, MacHeath was a notorious highwayman and ladies' man.

Review :

Bourvil underestimated

Although 'Le trou Normand' lives on as Brigitte Bardot's film-debut, I think this view an injustice to the great French actor Bourvil. It's him, in the principal role of Hyppolite, who greatly carries this rather enjoyable movie to its end.

Seventeen year old Brigitte plays a role she admittedly does not like: a not-too-sincere girl with a conceited state of mind. In spite of all that, the shape of things to come is clearly visible.
